leaky gut: adding glutamine to the diet

I’ve been pondering leaky gut syndrome lately…do I have it, don’t I have it?  Could be that the hives I currently am experiencing are due to a leaky gut.

This article talks about people with leaky gut: changing the diet, adding glutamine, resolving the leaky gut, and the possible link between leaky gut syndrome and heavy metal toxicity.

I’ve already talked about the “NASA” mattress poisoning problem I dealt with.  In December and January I detoxed my body from a good deal of whatever that was, and from what I could read online it sounded the most like heavy metal poisoning.  Could that be what’s going on?

And this website talks about how to fix your leaky gut.  An excerpt:

7 Steps to Optimal Digestive Health

To heal your inner tube of life you simply need to:

  • Eat whole unprocessed foods. Make sure to include plenty of fiber from foods like vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
  • Eliminate food allergies. If you think you have food sensitivities, try an elimination diet. Cut out gluten, dairy, yeast, corn, soy, and eggs for a week or two and see how your gut feels and what happens to your other symptoms.
  • Treat any infections or overgrowth of bugs. Parasites, small bowel bacteria, and yeasts can all inhibit proper gut function. You must treat these infections if you want to heal.
  • Replenish your digestive enzymes. When you don’t have enough digestive enzymes in your gut, you can’t properly convert the foods you eat into the raw materials necessary to run your body and brain. Take broad-spectrum digestive enzymes with your food to solve the problem.
  • Rebuild your rain forest of friendly bacteria. Take pro-biotic supplements. They will help you rebuild the healthy bacteria so essential to good gut health.
  • Heal your gut lining. Use gut-healing nutrients such as glutamine and zinc to repair the lining in your gut so it can resume its normal function.

Fixing your digestion may take some time, but it can be done. And it is absolutely essential if you want to achieve vibrant health.  So work on your inner tube of life using the steps above and watch as your symptoms (and those extra pounds) disappear.

Edit, December 14, 2014:  I do believe now that what I’ve had is a leaky gut, and I believe that I healed it using l-glutamine.  I’ve found other articles and comments in the two and a half years in between these two posts commenting on the connection between lack of magnesium in the diet and leaky gut, and inflammation, and how a lack of magnesium, causing inflammation, leads to fun things like leaky gut, ADHD in kids, and all sorts of fun body problems we shouldn’t need to deal with.  Here’s Dr. Claudia Pillow’s blog, for example, discussing these things, and giving recipes to get you going.
