Video: Memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses, and fire retardant chemicals

The guy who made this video really confirmed what I learned during my memory foam mattress saga.  My mattress really *was* trying to kill me.  If you’re wondering what’s going on with your health — and you just bought a mattress — check out this video.  Pay attention to the segment on the fire-retardant chemicals US mattress manufacturers have to use now.

After watching the video I went to check the J-Life International website, where I bought the shikibuton originally in 2011.  I’m pretty sure that in 2011 the J-Life people inserted information with the mattress they sold me saying that I needed to be aware that this mattress was not impregnated with fire-retardant chemicals and I had to take responsibility for that choice.  I bought the mattress without hesitation, mostly due to the fact that it wasn’t soaked in chemicals.  Now I see that the J-Life mattress “meets all US Federal flammability standards.”  I was aware in 2011 that the only way a person could buy a mattress not soaked in fire retardant chemicals was by getting a doctor’s prescription, but I thought I remembered that my J-Life mattress came without fire retardant chemicals.

People need to be aware of what’s going on with their mattresses these days.

I’m seriously thinking the only way to get a safe mattress now is to make my own.
